How do I fill and sign a PDF?
Short answer:Open the PDF in the Fill & Sign tool. Click into each field and type, tick boxes or pick from dropdowns. Then draw, type or upload a signature and place it, along with a date or your initials if the form asks. Choose whether to keep the fields fillable or flatten them, and save. Nothing is printed and nothing is uploaded.
Filling and signing belong together
A form is rarely just a signature. It wants your name, an address, a date, a choice from a list, maybe a tick to say you have read something, and then your signature at the end. Splitting those into two separate tools is an accident of how software grew up, not how a form works. Here they are one page. The fields sit on the document, and the signature is placed on it like everything else.
The tool reads a PDF’s own form fields and lays real inputs over them, sized and positioned exactly where the form drew them. If some fields already hold answers, those show up too, so a document that arrived half-filled opens half-filled.
What if there are no fields to fill?
Plenty of PDFs only look like forms. A scan, or a file exported as a flat page, has no fields at all, so there is nothing to type into. That is not a dead end. Choose Text, Date, Tick or Signature and place them anywhere on the page, exactly as you would with a pen. The tool looks for a form and uses one when it exists. Otherwise the free-placement tools take over.
If you expected fields and found none, you may have the wrong version of the file. Organisations often publish a blank scan on a web page and the real, fillable form behind a download link.
Keep it fillable, or flatten it
You decide what the file becomes. Keep the fields live and the answers stay editable, which suits a form that is still on its way to somebody else. Flatten it and every answer is drawn into the page, so it looks the same in any viewer and cannot be changed afterwards, which suits a finished document.
Either way the changes are added at the end of the PDF rather than rewriting it, so a digital signature already in the document is left intact. All of it happens in your browser, so the completed form never leaves your device.
More questions
Can I fill in and sign a PDF without an app?
Yes. The tool runs in any modern browser, on a computer or a phone, with nothing to install and no account to create. Open the page, add the PDF, fill it in and sign it.
Why can’t I type into the PDF?
The PDF has no fillable form fields, so it is most likely a scan or a flat export. You can still complete it by placing text, dates and a signature anywhere on the page with the same tool.
Do I have to sign it after filling it in?
No, the two are independent. You can fill the fields and download without adding a signature, or add a signature to a form you did not fill in. They are offered together because forms usually want both.
Is an e-signature added this way legally binding?
In many places, including under the US ESIGN Act and the EU’s eIDAS regulation, a signature placed on a document like this is a valid electronic signature for most everyday agreements. Some documents need a certificate-based digital signature or ink on paper instead. If you are not sure, ask whoever sent the document.
